Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, referred to as “DRC”, is one of the famous wineries in Burgundy. It owns not only Romanee-Conti, but also La Tachy ( La Tache), as well as vineyards such as Richebourg, Romanee-Saint-Vivant, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, etc. Other Grand Cru vineyards. It is considered one of the most expensive wines in the world and is known for its richness, complexity and longevity. The winery’s wines usually use grapes from vines with very low yields and undergo strict selection during brewing. Of course, timely harvests, superior plots and fine brewing are all secrets of success.

Romanee-Conti Vineyard is located on the west side of Vonne-Romani Village and belongs to Romanee Winery. It is one of the oldest vineyards in France, and its origins can be traced back to the medieval Saint-Vivant Abbey. The Abbey of Saint-Vivant de Vergy was founded around 900 AD by Manassé I in Vergy and is guarded by the Castle of Vergy. Devji Castle was built in the 7th century and is located on the top of Varz Hill, the frontier of the Côte de Nuits. Construction of the monastery began in the early 12th century by the Cisterciens, and the monastery became famous for its viticulture and winemaking. In 1232, Alix de Vergy of the Vergy family, a duchess of Burgundy, secured the interests of viticulture and harvests by proving ownership of the abbey’s land. In the 13th century, the Abbey of Saint-Vivant purchased and donated several facilities. In October 1276, Yves de Chasans, the then abbot of the monastery, purchased another plot of land, which included today’s Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.

By 1512, the Abbey of Saint-Vivant owned 4 plots, or 4 “clos” (“Clos” in modern French). From 1512 to 1584, the name of the vineyard of Chateau Romanee-Conti was changed to Cros des Cloux. On February 19, 1584, the winery owned by Clodclo was sold. After that, it changed hands many times, and on August 28, 1631, the winery was purchased by the Kronborg family. In 1651, the winery was renamed La Romanee (La Romanee) winery. Under the rule of the Kronborg family, Chateau Romanée’s reputation grew and wine prices soared. Except for the Montrachet production area, the price of Romanee-Conti’s wine is 5 to 6 times that of surrounding high-quality wineries.

In 1760, the Kronborg family was in debt and was forced to sell Chateau Romanée, which was already recognized as the top winery in Burgundy. The two rivals at the time were Louis Francois de Bourbon of the Bourbon dynasty, a cousin of the then French King Louis XV, also known as Prince de Conti. ); the other is Mme de Pompadour, the royal favorite’s mistress. In the fierce competition, the winery was eventually owned by Prince Conti, which became the origin of the name of the current winery – La Romanee Conti (La Romanee Conti).

In 1789, when the French Revolution came, the Conti family was expelled and the winery and vineyards were confiscated. After 1794, Chateau Romanée-Conti was sold many times. In 1869, the domaine was purchased by wine expert Jacques Marie Duvault Blochet for 260,000 francs. Thanks to the continued management of the Brochet family, Chateau Romanée-Conti has reached the status of a top winery in Burgundy and the world. In 1942, Henri Leroy purchased half of the Romanée-Conti estate from the Brocher family. At this point, Chateau Romanée-Conti became jointly owned by the two families.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that this top-notch chateau, which is now developing steadily, has also encountered disasters in the past. In the 1860s, when grape fly attacked France, the winery faced a crisis and had to use expensive chemical fertilizers to survive. In 1945, due to spring hail and the impact of World War II, the vines in the vineyard suffered heavy losses. Although new seedlings were transplanted from the neighboring Latache vineyard, the winery did not vine for six years in order to maintain the quality of the wine. Produces Romanee-Conti wine.

Today, Romanee-Conti Winery adopts natural cultivation methods and strict management. The yield of grapes is very small. Only 10,000 grapevines are planted per hectare. On average, every three grapevines can produce one bottle of wine. Only the famous Bordeaux winery Chateau Lafite can produce 1/50 of its bottle. In this winery, no one else is allowed to enter the garden during the grape harvest. Skilled workers pick the grapes by hand and send them to brewing after strict selection. The wine barrels used for brewing are all brand new oak barrels and have been air-dried for 3 years.

The price of Romanée-Conti is so high that it is known as the billionaire’s wine. It is said that Robert Parker, the “King of Wine”, rated Romanee-Conti’s wines above 90 points every year, and in 2005 it received a high score of 99-100. Today, Romanee-Conti is extremely rare on the market. The winery does not sell it individually, and usually can only buy 12 bottles of wine from other plots before selling one bottle of Romanee-Conti. Romanee-Conti is known as a legendary wine with a mysterious and elegant atmosphere.
